Although the act of serial killing and murder is predominantly committed by men, there are many instances of women committing the act. Unfortunately there has not been enough research regarding these female offenders to truly understand what causes this phenomenon. We do not have enough information to theorize why this might happen. For example, a woman might commit this crime because of abuse she endures from an intimate. Domestic abuse often causes the victim to feel they are in a position that they need to defend themselves. This theory does not hold true to males who commit murder. There are some women are offenders of this crime that are psychopath. They kill for the same reasons a male would kill. There is a need for much more extensive research in regards to these females. There are many interviews and analyses of psychopathic men, but hardly any of women. It is these interviews that allow us to really enter the mind of the offender. By conducting these with women we would have a much clearer view of whether or not women become serial killers for the same reason. It is also important to note the role of the media in regards to crimes committed by women. The media perceives women who kill to be pure evil, but not males. It is unknown as to whether or not these stereotypes and inequality could have any effect on whether or not a female commits murder. Women tend to get lost in society, even today, because of cultural roles that have been in place since our modern society existed. Further research would determine how much of an effect this truly has on women serial killers. Serial killers are an interesting topic to analyze, yet there is so much mystery, even today, regarding females who commit the act. In the future we may be able to understand why women commit the act. If it is as reasonable as domestic violence, police and other authorities can be trained to recognize these signs and prevent this crime. While there have been many advancements regarding this topic with the past fifty years, there is still a long way to come before this crime is fully understood.
